WELCOME!!!

As clearly embodied in our slogan, “Building Our Nation”, Shorncliffe’s involvement in the creation of core infrastructure systems has contributed to the country’s national, social and economic development.

Since the Shareholders are naturalized citizens of this great nation of Papua New Guinea, Shorncliffe now boasts of being a 100% nationally-owned Company. This gives the company an advantage over the major players in the road construction and civil engineering industry which are mostly foreign-owned enterprises.

“We will continue to build the nation and keep it growing!” - Sir SOEKANDAR TJANDRA and LADY TJAN SOE LAN TJANDRA

OUR VISION

BRIEF HISTORY

In 1967, Pioneer Road Services Pty Ltd. was established as a joint venture with Shell. In 1980 it was incorporated as Shorncliffe (PNG) Pty Ltd. and in 1988 became Shorncliffe (PNG) Ltd. Shareholding were changed in 2003 to two shareholders who are both Australian citizens. In 2007, these shareholders decided to go back to Australia for good and be with their families. The company was offered for sale.

On their own, Sir and Lady Tjandra, having built up their retail trade business was expanding into other business ventures such as Vanilla beans buying, importing and extraction, foam and mattress manufacturing, garments manufacturing, hotel operations, real estate business interests, the organization came to be known as the Papindo Group of Companies.

The Tjandras wanted to venture into the road construction and engineering business and established Hyper Construction Limited.

Fate would have it that Shorncliffe came their way so in May 2007, the Tjandras added Shorncliffe to the Papindo Group. Upon acquiring the company, the new Shareholders took stock of what the Company has. It has a good reputation within the construction industry and is well known to the donor agencies as a reliable and highly qualified contractor. However it was limited with resources and consequently in its capacity to get work.

To augment this shortcoming, the new shareholders invested heavily in plant and equipment and recruited highly qualified engineers, technicians and other staff. It also enhanced its management base to create a flat organization where everyone is accountable to everyone.

Today, the Company is the only contractor with 2 asphalt plants, more than 20 crushers, and a fleet of vehicles and road equipment to handle more than 20 contracts at any given time. It has increased its manpower base for more than 1,500 employees, nationals and expatriates. It has ongoing jobs all over PNG, especially in the major cities and provinces.

The very bright prospect of a multi-billion dollar US Dollars Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) projects are looming in the horizon and everyone in PNG is gearing up to the changes these projects will bring. Shorncliffe is no exception. Thanks to the foresight of the shareholders, directors and management, the Company is fully equipped to take on the challenges that the growing demand in infrastructure will bring about to the country and the economy.

With its fleet of plant, machinery, equipment and transport, laboratory and technical facilities, which are among the best in PNG, Shorncliffe can assure its customers of prompt delivery of work, reliability and dependability— a reputation that is embedded deeply in the Company’s core values. Our major business interests—road construction, sealing, upgrading and maintenance, civil engineering and related earthworks, bridges supply and erection, airport construction and maintenance and all other related fields— provide clients with comprehensive range of services necessary to undertake their requirements.

Our most valuable resource is our human resource, a combination of a highly qualified and experienced expatriate and national staff. We have developed and will continue to develop this resource—engineers, supervisors, inspectors and operators—into managers who can handle projects and aspects of the job efficiently and promptly without sacrificing quality and excellence—another core value of the Company. We also provide apprenticeship programs to young Papua New Guineans to prepare them to very fruitful careers in Engineering and to ensure the continuity of these rare breed of professionals.
We foresee tie-ups, joint ventures and other business relationships with other interested companies to carry-out major construction projects, either in lead or support roles. We shall continue to support the communities within our work environment through gainful contractual employment, community improvement facilities, HIV and other health-related education and awareness campaigns. These embody other core values of the Company—mutually beneficial synergies and caring for the environment and the communities.

These core values permeate each and every individual involved with Shorncliffe. Together, we shall persist to “build our nation” and bring it to the greatest it can ever be.

This is our vision, the future we look forward to…..
